A Design Built For The Family

Perched along the Eagle course with the Bighorn Mountains rising behind it, this property came with a view most homeowners only dream of, and a challenge: how do you build an outdoor space sophisticated enough for adult entertaining, functional enough for a young, growing family, and private enough to feel like a retreat, all without giving up the mountain and fairway views that make the lot special?

The answer started with an outdoor kitchen anchored by a full bar top, built to pull guests outside and keep them there — plenty of room to cook, pour, and gather before the group ever moves to the fire. Porcelain tile ties the patio together with a look built to outlast trends, while that same porcelain, set within bands of epoxy-set gravel, carries the material out along the paths that wind around the house.

To solve the privacy-versus-view, we shaped the grade into a series of berms rather than reaching for a tall fence. Positioned with sightlines in mind, they screen the neighboring holes and homes exactly where privacy mattered most, while leaving the mountains and fairways open where the family wanted them framed.

Those berms — and the beds around them — are planted for motion through the year, not a single peak week. Drawing on the layered, ever-changing character of a Pacific Northwest garden, the palette shifts from spring bloom to summer color to fall foliage, so the view out the window keeps changing instead of going flat and green from June to September.

Balancing Privacy and Views

A cascading stone fountain sits off the patio as a quiet counterpoint to all that entertaining space - the kind of low water sound that settles a gathering without anyone noticing why. Just steps away, a corten steel fire pit anchors the main seating area, its warm, weathered face doing double duty as sculpture and heat source, and easily the spot where evenings end.

None of it forgets who else lives there. The area was given new life to give the kids their own space, so the yard works as hard for a six-year-old as it does for a dinner party. And in the breezeway connecting the home's wings, a row of tall corten planters brimming with color turns a simple walk between spaces into its own small moment.
